Accident Preparedness



An auto collision can stir up a lot of emotion, fear, and adrenaline. That's why we're bringing you this checklist to keep you focused on doing the right thing before and after an accident!

1. Be prepared, keep these items in your vehicle: a current insurance ID card, vehicle registration, a list of emergency contacts, a medical card noting any allergies to medication or specific medical conditions, pen or pencil, notepad, first aid kit, blanket, jumper cables, disposable camera, and a copy of this list.

2. Be safe: move the vehicle to a safe location, check for injuries, call 911 for medical assistance, do not leave the scene of the accident.

3. Communication: Contact police, they will let you know if their presence is needed, cooperate with the police, don’t admit fault, and remain calm.

4. Vehicle NOT drivable: Call a wrecker to request to have your vehicle towed.

5. Exchange Contact information (including vehicle owner information, if not the driver) with all parties involved: name, address, email, phone number.

6. Exchange Vehicle information for all vehicles involved: year, make, model, license plate number.

7. Exchange Insurance information (including vehicle owner information if not the driver): insurance company name, policy #, agent or claims department phone #.

8. Gather any witness information: name, address, email, phone #.

9. Gather police information: Department name, officer name, badge number, and police report # (if available).

10. Gather documentation: photos of the scene, photos of the damage, and jot down the location of the accident.
